Former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has invested in British AI chip startup Fractile, a company developing in-memory computing chips to enhance AI inference performance. While financial details of the investment remain undisclosed, Gelsinger announced the news on LinkedIn, expressing enthusiasm about advising the company.
Founded in 2022 by Dr. Walter Goodwin at the University of Oxford’s Robotics Institute, Fractile aims to address the challenges of AI inference by integrating processing directly into memory, reducing power consumption and improving efficiency. The startup emerged from stealth in July 2024 after securing $15 million in seed funding from Kindred Capital, Nato Innovation Fund, Oxford Science Enterprises, and angel investors.
Gelsinger highlighted the urgent need for faster, more efficient AI inference hardware, aligning with his own graduate research at Stanford. Fractile’s CEO, Goodwin, welcomed Gelsinger’s involvement, calling it a significant boost as the company works toward advancing AI compute capabilities.
