£4 Million Deal to Expand Shared Solar Technology Across the UK and Europe
A groundbreaking E.ON UK investment is set to transform the solar energy landscape for apartment dwellers. Allume Energy, the Australian cleantech firm behind the innovative SolShare system, has secured a £4 million boost from the energy giant to bring rooftop solar directly to individual flats—cutting bills and carbon footprints in the process.
SolShare: A World-First in Shared Solar Technology
Founded in Melbourne in 2015, Allume Energy developed SolShare to solve a long-standing challenge: how to deliver rooftop solar power to residents in multi-unit buildings. Traditionally, energy from rooftop panels on apartments only powered common areas, leaving individual units reliant on the grid.
SolShare changes that. The system fairly distributes electricity from a single rooftop solar array to multiple flats in real-time, based on each unit’s usage. All of this happens behind the meter, meaning no changes are needed to energy suppliers or the grid infrastructure. Residents still have the freedom to choose their provider, while automatically receiving their share of solar energy.
E.ON UK Investment: Driving Inclusive Clean Energy Access
With its £4 million investment, E.ON UK is backing SolShare as a scalable, socially inclusive energy solution. Chris Norbury, CEO of E.ON UK, stated:
“Our investment in Allume is another important step towards making the transition to clean energy more inclusive. More than a fifth of British homes—five million—are in apartment buildings that until now have been locked out of rooftop solar. With SolShare, we see a huge opportunity to cut bills and carbon emissions for the many, not the few.”
E.ON UK Investment Targets Fuel Poverty and Expands Clean Energy Access
Apartment residents, especially in social housing, often face the highest rates of fuel poverty. Technical and ownership complexities have historically excluded them from solar adoption. SolShare provides a practical, low-cost retrofit option for older buildings, opening the door to clean, affordable energy.
“Allume’s mission is to bring solar to those who’ve been left out,” said Cameron Knox, CEO of Allume. “This partnership with E.ON UK is a transformational moment. It enables us to grow across the UK and launch new models across Europe, where 300 million people live in similar apartment settings.”
Impressive Impact and Global Reach
SolShare is already making a significant difference, with over 6,000 homes around the world currently benefiting from the system. To date, it has delivered more than 14 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity, helping residents achieve potential savings of 30 to 60 percent on their household electricity bills. In the UK, more than half of Allume’s installations are in partnership with social housing providers, further highlighting the strong social impact of the company’s mission.
Looking Ahead: A Greener Future for Apartment Residents
With operations in Australia, the UK, and the U.S., and now a powerful E.ON UK investment, Allume is preparing for a major expansion into the broader European market. As cities look to retrofit older housing stock with sustainable technologies, SolShare offers a compelling, scalable solution that brings solar benefits to all.
