Gurugram Startup Leverages Generative AI to Make English Speaking Accessible and Profitable

Gurugram-based AI startup SpeakX.ai has raised $16 million in a Pre-Series B round to accelerate its mission of transforming English learning through artificial intelligence. The round was led by WestBridge Capital, with participation from Elevation Capital, Goodwater Capital, and angel investors Shyamal Anadkat (OpenAI) and Ronnie Screwvala (upGrad).

Founded in 2023 by Arpit Mittal, SpeakX.ai is a generative AI-powered English speaking platform built to close India’s spoken English gap. “India does not need another generic edtech app,” said Mittal. “We are building a truly AI-native language company with the goal of making SpeakX synonymous with English speaking.”

In just two years, SpeakX.ai has surpassed one million monthly learners and 200,000 paying subscribers, achieving an annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $7.5 million. Impressively, the company has been EBITDA-positive since April 2025, generating $150,000 in monthly profits and $1 million in cumulative EBITDA over five months.

Learners spend an average of 15 minutes per session with the platform’s AI tutor, practicing real-life role-plays such as job interviews, workplace discussions, and casual conversations. “English for our users is not just a skill — it’s confidence, career, and dignity,” Mittal emphasized, highlighting the company’s broader social impact.

With this new funding, SpeakX.ai aims to scale its operations, target ₹100 crore in annual EBITDA by 2026, and build a $300–400 million business in India. The startup joins a growing field of AI-driven English learning platforms, including Enguru, ELSA Speak, Orai, and Utter.
